With more designers choosing light-frame wood construction for mid-rise buildings, code-compliant and constructible detailing has emerged as a challenge for some teams accustomed to smaller wood projects or those built in other materials. The most frequent questions pertain to requirements for detailing the intersection of rated floor-to-exterior wall assemblies and where structure and fire protection meet. This presentation will focus on these and other common detailing issues, as well as the nuances of different construction types, possible compliance paths, and rationale for approval—all emphasizing constructability and practicality.

Laura Cullen, PE, Regional Director | WoodWorks
Laura Cullen is passionate about educating others on the benefits of building with wood. Prior to joining WoodWorks, Laura worked as a structural designer for seven years. Her previous structural design experience focused primarily on mixed-use and multi-family structures, as well as K-12 schools. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Berry College. Laura is based in the Atlanta area, where she is a member of CREW Atlanta, a business network for the commercial real estate market, and a 2018 graduate of Leadership CREW.
Mark Bartlett, PE, Regional Director | WoodWorks
Mark joined the WoodWorks team in 2017. Before joining WoodWorks, he spent 11 years as a consulting engineer, eight years as a field engineer with Simpson Strong-Tie, and six years in business development for an engineering firm. His structural engineering project experience includes retail, hospitality, education, aviation, theaters, renovations of existing structures, and post-installed anchorage to concrete. Mark received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures from Lehigh University and has worked as a structural engineer in many capacities. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Texas and Oklahoma.
